Today’s grammar refresher is dedicated to the usage of the personal pronouns ‘me’ and ‘I.’ Question: Is it “my friend and me” or “my friend and I?”  Answer: It depends on the context of the sentence.

Quick Tip: The easiest way to decide which is the correct personal pronoun to use is to eliminate the person(s) from the sentence.  Let’s explore this concept.

Which is correct?

1. Chris and I went to the store.
2. Chris and me went to the store.

If you chose ‘A,’ you are correct.  Let’s use the ‘quick tip’ to choose the correct answer.

If you eliminate the person, in this instance Chris, from the sentences they read:

1. I went to the store
2. Me went to the store

When you look at it this way, the answer is obviously ‘A.’

Let’s try another example. Which is correct?

1. This is a picture of Shannon, Tiffany, and I.
2. This is a picture of Shannon, Tiffany, and me.

If you chose answer ‘B,’ you are correct.  This one is a little tricky so let’s try using the ‘quick tip’ again.

When you eliminate the people in the sentences (Shannon and Tiffany), they read like this:

1. This is a picture of I.
2. This is a picture of me.

Now it’s easy to see why ‘B’ is the correct answer.
